一九六九年，美國進行了首次人類登陸月球之旅。雖然過程中曾出現了通訊短暫中斷的事故，但最後整個登月行動都順利完成，太空人尼爾．岩士唐（Neil Armstrong，台譯：尼爾．阿姆斯壯）與巴茲．艾德靈（Edwin Aldrin，台譯：伯茲．艾德林）安全返回地球，成為了人類歷史上首兩位成功登陸月球的人。岩士唐（編按：阿姆斯壯）登陸時更說出了一句簡單卻又意義宏大的說話：「那是一個人的一小步，人類的一大步。」（That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.）
阿波羅11號是人類首次登陸月球的載人太空飛行任務，指令長尼爾·阿姆斯壯（左）與登月艙駕駛員伯茲·艾德林（右）組成美國登月組於1969年7月20日20時17分乘「鷹號」登月艙在月球表面著陸。中間則為當時擔任指令艙駕駛員麥可·科林斯獨自在「哥倫比亞號」服務與指令艙繞月飛行。（維基共享）
不過，以當時太空科技，以及對月球真實環境未知的情況下，登月任務不一定能成功。如果當時登月任務失敗，兩名登陸月球的太空人因發生未知災難而殉職，美國白宮方面會如何應對呢？當時，除了約翰．甘迺迪（John Kennedy）最終真實發布的恭賀演說外，美國政府方面其實也有第二手準備。當登月行動失敗後，總統會對外作出什麼演說。
當時擔任美國總統演說撰稿人的威廉．薩菲爾（William Safire，在信中稱為比爾 Billy）就為此向當時的白宮幕僚長哈利．羅賓斯．霍爾德曼（Harry Robbins Haldeman）準備了以下這份給總統的講稿。如果看英文原文，這封講稿實在是一篇恰到好處、有相當文字修飾而又不會太過火的佳作。

July 18, 1969.IN EVENT OF MOON DISASTER:
Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.
These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.
These two men are laying down their lives in mankind’s most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.
They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send to of her sons into the unknown.
In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.
In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.
Others will follow, and surely find their way home. Man’s search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.
For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.
PRIOR TO THE PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT:
The President should telephone each of the widows-to-be.
AFTER THE PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT, AT THE POINT WHEN NASA ENDS COMMUNICATIONES WITH THE MEN:
A clergyman should adopt the same procedure as a burial at sea, commending their souls to “the deepest of the deep,” concluding with the Lord’s Prayer.

如果月球發生災難：
命運注定那些和平前往月球探索的人，將留在那裡永遠安息。
兩個勇敢的人－尼爾．岩士唐（編按：尼爾．阿姆斯壯）與巴茲．艾德靈（編按：伯茲．艾德林），意識到自己再無歸家的希望。但是他們同樣意識到，自己的犧牲將為人類帶來希望。
這兩個人把生命奉獻給人類最崇高的理想－追求真相與理解。
他們的家人和朋友會哀悼他們；他們的國家會哀悼他們；整個世界的人都會哀悼他們；曾敢於把兩位兒子送到未知世界的大地之母，也都會哀悼他們。
他們探索，讓世人團結一致；他們犧牲，讓世人情同手足。
在古代，人們抬頭仰望星空，在星座中發現他們的英雄。在現代，我們也在做同樣的事，只是我們的英雄卻是個有血有肉的偉大之人。
其他人將會追隨他們的步伐，並必定能找到回家的路，人類的探索不會就此止步。但這些探索月球的先行者，會永遠佔據我們心中最重要的位置。
日後，每當人們夜晚抬頭仰望月亮的時候，都會知道在另一個世界的某個角落，有著人類的永恆。
